that de-emphasizes the importance of metanarrative. Will any of the above directly influence your campaign! Probably not! Chances are the PCs have no clue any of this happened, and even if they did know, they wouldn't care. (Were these twists of fate "natural"? Or caused by the unseen changes to the underlying fabric of reality? Nobody really knows!)Įven better, the flavor fiction focuses on characters who remember the previous "edition" of reality, and are struggling to reconcile that alternative universe with this new (often better, sometimes familiar) world. Two fan-favorite characters from the previous edition have turned into near-opposites of what they once were, and many factions from the previous editions have seen their fortunes changed for the worse, or for the weirder.

UA3 features a literal "edition change" for the setting, where a series of world-altering occult events fundamentally (but subtly) altered the nature of reality. One of my favorite "metanarrative" developments in recent memory was the shift from Unknown Armies 2nd edition to 3rd.
