The game has a classic mode which disables the story, and a lot of players choose this. The problem is that the story is one of the main focuses of those games. If you want examples of villains in platformers that are more complex, look at the Ori games, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, etc.

It can have one yes, but it doesn't NEED one.

In fact it's what made Freedom Planet unique to begin with.Īn indie platformer can make us question things, video games are a great medium for that. We got too many of them.Īnd this is what sets it out from others than just another indie 2D platformer. Why not? Enough of videogames with bidimentional "I wanna rule the Earth" villains. This is a high octane platformer, not an RPG like Witcher or Dragon Age. Originally posted by Djent Djester:This game doesn't need a complex villain. It's all so mindnumbingly good and feels nostalgic/reminiscent of the 16 bit era The giant mech thing he uses to fight you, the ship you fight at the end of Battle Glacier 1, the Dreadnaught and Thermal Base. I also really like the aesthetic of all of his alien robots and contraptions. FP2 is that as well while also feeling like its trying to send a message to its players and the world. FP1 feels more like an innocent love-letter to the 16 bit era. The overall tone of the two game's stories are pretty different. He's such a gamey ass villain that you love to hate. Whereas Merga as a villain feels more like a "modern" villain that we see in games these days where so many writers try to make them feel sympathetic and all that which is great and all. And the story of the first game overall really hit that vibe well. He's a ruthlessly evil, alien who invades a planet and kills kings and ♥♥♥♥ that feels very reminiscent of that era.

This game doesn't need a complex villain. TLDR: Merga's story felt unfulfilling and just left me with unanswered questions.īrevon was straightforward and ruthless with no room for empathy. When Merga asked Lilac, "Do you know what happened to all the water dragons," I was asking the game, "What even happened to all the earth dragons? Why did the Magister even need to hide his face if earth dragons are so well-accepted? What 'crimes' did the Magister even commit, Askal?" Why work with a half earth dragon, if she hates them enough to ravage their planet? Why blow up the moon her people worships? Why not just point Bakunawa's beam directly at the Magister, and everything resembling earth dragons? Why blame everything on the current Magister who she knows had nothing to do with the genocide of her race? She might as well still blame Cordelia, accusing her of "softening her up," in order to leave her race vulnerable without their strongest warrior. However, by the end most of her rationale and actions made zero sense to me.

I thought Merga had great potential to be a great sympathetic villain, from the moment I watched the first FP2 reveal trailer. (Note, I prefer FP2 to FP1 for the most part)
